In the past, the notion of courtship was non-existent. A girl's father chose her husband which she had to accept. sometimes before the age of 5 she was already betrothed to a man who would take her as wife upon her coming of age. The aim of marriage is for reproduction or procreation and being unmarried is regared as a curse.
